Zelda Marie Hyman

Zelda Marie "Ree Ree" Figgs Hyman was born April 28, 1953 in Suffolk, Virginia. She was the daughter of Rosa Figgs and the late William Figgs. She graduated as Salutatorian from John F. Kennedy High on June 10, 1971. Zelda became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in April 1973 while attending Hampton Institute (now University). Earning a nursing degree in May 1975, she began her career as a Registered Nurse (RN) at Norfolk General Hospital. Later she transitioned to a career in psychiatric nursing, working at the Pines Residential Treatment Center and Virginia Beach Psychiatric. Zelda ended her nursing career when she retired from the Virginia Beach Health Department where she headed the immunization clinic. Zelda married her high school sweetheart, Alvin Breon Hyman on October 16, 1976. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Breon; two children, Kevin and Nicole; her dog Apollo and granddog Moose; her mother, Rosa Figgs; her sister, Ada Sharpe; a niece, Aleda Sharpe; and nephews, Breon (Tina) and Benjamin (Tami) Sharpe; along with many great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Thelma Hyman Woodson; sisters-in-law, Jennifer Hyman, Gwendolyn Wilson, Willie Mae Wilson, Rose Marie Gray and Jacqueline Moore (Fred; brothers-in-law, William Hyman, Charles Hyman, Ronald Hyman, Tony (Renita), Elston Hyman, Roland Wilson, Sherrod Wilson (Lisa) and Tony Wilson(Vernetta); uncles, McCoy Goodman and Jessie Warren; step-siblings, William Hunt and Portia Bell. A celebration of life will be held noon, Friday, July 28, 2023 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 2635 E. Washington Street, Suffolk, Virginia 23434.
