On Sunday morning, September 19, 2021, at 5:30 am, God sent his special angels to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA to claim one of his own, William Larry Hancock, after a short illness. Larry was born April 23, 1949 in Rocky Mount, VA. He was the third-oldest of the late William McKinley Hancock and the late Berlie Kate Edwards Hancock. Larry graduated from Lee M. Waid High School in 1967. In 1968, he went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1971. Larry was united in marriage in July 1973 to Mary Elizabeth Trent. To their union, one son was born, Nicholas Anthony Hancock. Larry was a faithful member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Penhook, for many years. He served as Lay Leader and treasurer for a number years. He also represented the church at the District and Annual Conferences. Larry captured the hearts of the youth and young adults in the church with his charming personality. He was a favorite and trusted member of the church. Larry was always willing to support any member that needed assistance. He was a true and faithful servant of God. Any who had a yearning to learn about Christ knew to call on Larry. Larry was employed at Yokohama Tire Corporation for 33 years. He enjoyed working alongside his wife Mary assisting where needed with the Adult Education Program at Mt. Zion. He also used his mastery of computer technology to teach many in the church and the community. In addition, he and Mary organized and worked the Cancer Survivor’s dinner as well as diligently working with Relay for Life and Lord’s Acre. He loved listening to music and watching his favorite sports teams, the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Lakers. In addition, he loved entertaining and spending time with his family especially during 4th of July and Christmas. One of his favorite forms of entertainment, other than sports, was playing cards with close friends and family. Larry especially enjoyed cooking on the grill with his son, Nicholas. Larry was preceded in death by his mother and father, William McKinley and Berlie Kate Edwards Hancock; and his older sister, Matilda Hancock Manns. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Mary Trent Hancock and a devoted son, Nicholas Anthony Hancock; one sister, Mary Hancock Williams of Rocky Mount, VA; four brothers: Lonnie Eugene (Nedra) Hancock of Richlands, NC; Steve Wayne (friend Nikki) Hancock of Rocky Mount; Roger Lee (Constance) Hancock of Lynchburg, VA; Gregory Allen (Lisa) Hancock and brother-in-law, Leroy Manns, both of Rocky Mount, VA. Larry will be dearly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, other relatives and friends. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 25, 2021 at Faith Fellowship Church 100 Wirtz Road, Wirtz, VA 24184. He will be laid to rest in Franklin Memorial Park, 215 Franklin Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
