Wallace J. Lewter, Sr.

December 22, 1926 — December 25, 2018

Deacon Wallace J. Lewter, 92, of Suffolk, Va., peacefully departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 25, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Charlie T. Lewter Sr. and Lillie Peele Lewter. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Marion Lewter; a son, Wallace J. Lewter Jr.; two granddaughters, Michelle Nichols Young and Tyra Lee Lewter; a great-granddaughter, Madison Young; one great-grandson, Jaxin Lewter; a sister, Clarine Artis; and six brothers, Charlie T. Lewter Jr., Rawley Lewter, Elton Lewter, Clyde Lewter, Chester Lewter and Melvin Lewter. Deacon Lewter moved from Woodland, N.C. to Suffolk, Va., as a young child. During his adolescence he was a member of the Harmony Four Quartet and was regularly featured on radio station WLPM as documented in Suffolk: A Pictorial History. He joined the Army as a young man and upon his return married his childhood sweetheart, Marion Hamlin. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 30 years. He was a faithful member and worker at Tabernacle Christian Church under the Rev. J.O. Lee, where he met his wife Marion on the junior usher board. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Lodge No. 48 PHA. Deacon Lewter was known for his mild manner and sense of humor. His favorite quote was, “I’m doing the best I can with what I got to work with.” He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Brenda Nichols (Joel), of Suffolk, Va., and Linda Lewter of Chesapeake, Va.; three sons, Major Lewter Sr. (Myra) of Waldorf, Md., Zann Lewter (Caregiver) of Suffolk, Va., and Chester Lewter (Dee), of Richmond, Va.; one godson, Lonnie Askew (Theresa), of Suffolk, Va.; a goddaughter, niece, and nurse, Doris Futrell of Suffolk, Va.; ten grandchildren, Tamara Brown (Warren) of Richmond, Va., Chante Smith (George), of Chesapeake, Va., Mone’ Ellis (Heraldo “D”) of Forestville, Md., Major Lewter, Jr. (Mani) of Alexandria, Va., Marcus Lewter of Waldorf, Md., Jamal Lewter (Ashley) of Richmond, Va., Joshua Lewter (Serita) of Franconia Va., Rasheem Parker of Richmond, Va. Lisa and Quinton Dozier of Washington, DC.; eight great-grandchildren, Techan Nichols, of Suffolk, Va., Marcel Young of Suffolk, Va., Aaron, Trey, and Brianna Brown, of Richmond, Va., Maniah and Maliah Lewter of Alexandria, Va., Raven Ellis of Fort Washington, Md.; two great-great-grandchildren, Lauren and Khloe Nichols of Suffolk, Va.; a special nephew and caregiver, Thomas (Wendell) Lewter; a faithful nephew and niece the Rev.
