Waleed Abdus Hunter

October 22, 1946 — September 7, 2021

In the early hours of the morning at 2:00 a.m. on Monday, September 7, 2021 the "Lord" sent an angel to Riverside Regional Hospital, Newport News, Virginia to take home our beloved father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend to get his crown. Waleed Abdus Hunter , who at birth was named Walter B. Hunter, Jr. was the oldest of five children born to the late Walter B. Hunter, Sr. and Cornelia Brock Hunter in Suffolk, Virginia on October 22, 1946. When he was born, he was so tiny, his late aunt "Pearl Adams" began to call him "Inky." In the "Williamstown and Boston" community where he grew up, everybody, especially his family and friends, called him "Inky." He received his early educational training in the city of Suffolk, which began at Mrs. Poses kindergarten, on Tyne St. From there, Andrew J. Brown Elementary School, and Booker T. Washington High School. He was an "Alumnus" of Booker T. Washington High School class of 1965. In 1966 , Waleed furthered his educational training at Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia, where he received a Master's Degree in Business Administration and Accounting and a degree in Commercial Art. Waleed was initiated as a member of the "Kappa Alpha Psi" Fraternity in 1967 at Virginia State University. After graduating college, he moved to East Orange, New Jersey and worked in various large financial corporations and traveled to other states training others. Upon his professional retirement from the corporate world, Waleed returned home and worked as a substitute teacher in Suffolk Public Schools. He received his religious education and training at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church Suffolk, Virginia and occasionally attended the Islamic Mosque in Norfolk, Virginia. Waleed was a great artist and oil painter, has written a book of poems, and authored two books, dedicating one to his mother. Though he was 74 years of age and whether we called him Waleed, Walter, Jr. or Inky, he will always remain in our hearts as the kindhearted, loving father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and loyal friend to all who knew him. Preceding the death of his mother, he leaves to cherish his memories: two daughters, Kafi Hunter and Sharifa Hunter Stirgus (Shon) of Little Rock, Arkansas; step daughter, Melissa Pringle of Suffolk, Virginia; a son, Andre Hunter of Suffolk, Virginia; two sisters, Rita Faye Hunter of Suffolk, Virginia and Rev. Kathleen Grant (Phillip) of Smithfield, Virginia; two brothers, Tony Hunter ( Jennetta) of Suffolk, Virginia and James Hunter (Barbara) of Spanaway, Washington; six grandchildren, Alayah, Jayla Stirgus, and Halo Ray all of Little Rock, Arkansas, Quanisha Bates, Oriel Pringle, and Brittany Williams, all of Suffolk, Virginia; one great-grandchild, Mackynize Williams of Suffolk, Virginia; one aunt, Sallie B. Person of Suffolk, Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a devoted friend, Minister Janice Harper Copeland.
