Sonja Parker

August 23, 1946 — June 14, 2021

Sonja Heine Parker passed away on June 14, 2021 at her residence. After a long battle with illness, she is finally at peace and rest. Sonja was born in Nansemond County (now Suffolk) on August 23, 1946 to the late Cyrus Jackson Sears and Lucille Melton Sears. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first born child Mary Sabrina Parker, sisters Cynthia (Peggy) Hopkins, Jacqueline (Sister) Gainey, Evelyn Faye Ledbetter, Naomi Beslow and brother Alvin Sears. Sonja received her education with the Suffolk Public School system. She worked many years in retail and retired from Sears, Roebuck and Company. She was a long term and faithful member of Pleasant Union Baptist Church and affiliated member with various ministries to include: Deborah Usher Ministry, Paul and Lydia Missionary, Women’s Fellowship Ministry, Pastor’s Aide Ministry and the Life-Long Learners Bible Study Ministry. Sonja was married to the late John H. Parker, Sr. . With that union, Sonja leaves to cherish her memory 2 sons, John H. Parker, Jr. (Renee) Parker of Portsmouth, VA and U.S. Army Major Michael J. Parker (Christal) of Fontana, CA and one daughter Daphne Eaton (Vaughn) of Chesapeake, VA, grandchildren Derek, Jalante', Tiffany and Savannah; 10 great grandchildren; one brother Cyrus (CJ) Sears (Katherine), sisters Linda (Edward) Arrington and Miriam Sears and with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other family and friends. We take comfort in knowing that she is in the presence of God and suffers no more. As the COVID health crisis is not over, the family has considered options to allow a public funeral service rather that for it to be private. In order to practice safety and protect those most vulnerable to include the elderly and those with compromised health conditions, the family requests that all funeral service attendees (within the appropriate age) to please wear a mask. Feel free to sit close to those who live in your home, however all others should be prepared to sit with some space between you and your neighbor whether standing or sitting during the service. It is up to us all to continue with the practice of safety first. Thanks in advance for your understanding. A viewing will be 10-4p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2021 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2021 at Pleasant Union Baptist Church. She will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Sonja Parker, please visit our flower store.
