Mrs. Shirley Mae Hawkins died peacefully at home on January 4th, 2024 in Lawrenceville, Georgia at the age of eighty-seven.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Hawkins of Suffolk, Virginia and her son Tyrone Hawkins of Suffolk, Virginia and her grandson Cleavon Young, Jr. and her great-grandson Derahn Hawkins, Suffolk, GA.
Shirley was born on April 9th, 1936 in {City, State} to Ernest Collanders and Ellie Mae Williams. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She married James Robert Hawkins, her high school sweetheart in 1956. After moving to New Jersey, Shirley began working for Continental Can as a supervisor. She later worked at Revlon Cosmetics Incorporated from which she retired. Over several years, the couple welcomed three children into their home.
Shirley was passionate about bingo and watching soap operas and she loved to travel. She was a generous individual who loved her family and often gathered with them at cookouts, holiday parties and special family events. Shirley was a devout member of Bethlehem Christian Church.
Her children remember her as a loving mother who supported them in all their endeavors. Her beautiful life will be forever cherished in the lives of all who knew her.
She leaves the following to mourn her passing; her children Gwendolyn Yvette Washington and Brian Keith Hawkins, her grand-children, Tojuan Hawkins, Monica Hawkins, Tonia Hawkins, Demetria Hawkins, Terrell Hawkins and Schora Grose. Her great-grandchildren Antonia Faulks, Shala Smith and Dierra (Peady) Doyle, Her great-great grand-children Kurahn Robinson, Kaiden Lynch, Nassir Faulks, Nyari Faulks, Nyla Faulks, Namir Faulks, Janiyla Cook and Zhymire Hawkins.
Visiting hours will be at Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, Virginia on January 19th from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. A celebration of life will be held noon, Friday, January 19, 2024 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel. Rev. Emmanuel Myrick will officiate the ceremony. She will be laid to rest in Carver Memorial Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Shirley’s life.
