Roger Ronell Hicks of Leafwood Road, Suffolk, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 14, 2021. He was born on April 6, 1940 to the late Roger Pryor Hicks and Annie Mildred Boothe Hicks. Ronell attended Hayden High School. He had a long career at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company as a shipfitter until his retirement in 2002. At an early age, he became a member of Zion United Church of Christ where he also served as an usher and performed janitorial services. Ronell was very generous and absolutely loved his family! His grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially, put so much joy in his life and a big smile on his face every time they were in his presence. He also looked forward to the weekly meals his daughter-in-law prepared; he let it be known that he loved her cooking! He is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Banks Hicks (63 years), and four children; Derwin (Margaret) Hicks of Suffolk, Valerie (David) Spencer of Germantown, MD, Janine (Teralle – deceased) Rawls of Chesapeake, VA, and Janice (Rev. Dr. Carl, Jr) Sweat of Suffolk. He is also survived by his brother, Jesse Earl Hicks of Suffolk, three aunts; Carrie Scott, Mary Hankerson, Clarice Roscoe, one uncle; Henry Thomas Boothe, brothers-in-law; James (Eula) Banks and James Dailey, Sr., and Rev. Dr. Robert Rodgers, sisters-in-law; Arlie Shropshire, Mary Electa (Harold) Lockley, Louise Cargill, Virginia Banks, and Geraldine Banks; nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. A celebration of life will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 21, 2021, at Zion Christian Church, 5200 Quaker Road, Suffolk. He will be laid to rest in the Laurel Hill United Church of Christ cemetery, 8001 South Quay Road, Suffolk. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
