Reverend Medicia Marie Wright

July 24, 1937 — December 11, 2025

Suffolk

Medicia Marie Wright was born on July 24, 1937, in Hobson section in Nansemond County, Virginia, to the late Jesse Garfield Pittman and Everline Mann Pittman. As the youngest of eleven children, six boys and five girls, she was raised in a home filled with love, faith, and strong family bonds that shaped the woman she would become.

In 1941, Medicia moved to Sandy Bottom section in Nansemond County, where she later attended East Suffolk High School in Nansemond County and graduated in 1953. It was there that she met the love of her life, Wilson Wright, Sr. The two were united in holy matrimony on July 10, 1954, beginning a marriage grounded in faith, family, and a shared commitment to serving others.

Soon after their union, Medicia and her family relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where they made their home for nearly three decades. While living in Brooklyn, she worked as a counselor with the Board of Education, pouring patience, care, and wisdom into the lives of countless children and families. Her work reflected her nurturing spirit and deep compassion for others.

Medicia was a devoted mother who cherished her children deeply. She welcomed her first son, Patrick Stevenson Wright, in October 1954, and later her son, Wilson Wright, Jr., born in February 1974. In September 1981, the family returned to Suffolk, Virginia, settling in East Suffolk Garden, where Medicia continued to build a life rooted in faith, service, and community.

She faithfully served at Wayside Baptist Church in Brooklyn before becoming actively involved at Oak Grove Baptist Church Suffolk, Virginia where she taught Sunday School and served as President of the Missionary Board. As her journey continued, Medicia felt led to return back to Sandy Bottom, in 2000, a place that would become central to the next chapter of her life and where her faith and calling would continue to grow. After returning to Sandy Bottom, she became a member of Diamond Grove Church, where she answered God’s call into ministry and was ordained as a Reverend in 2001 by Reverend Calvin Lillard. Her relationship with God was the foundation of her life, and her faith was evident not only in her words, but in the way she lived, steadfast, humble, and full of love.

In the mid-1980s, Medicia opened her heart and home through a babysitting business, caring for more than 100 children over a span of 20 years. To many families, she became far more than a caregiver. She was a second mother, a steady presence, and a trusted pillar within the community.

Affectionately known as “Deecie”, Medicia was remembered for her warm spirit and gentle joy. She was known for her gentle presence and steady wisdom, always offering a listening ear and a word of encouragement. She found happiness in shopping at Roses, studying the Bible, watching westerns, and above all, serving the Lord. Her presence brought comfort, her wisdom brought peace, and her love left a lasting imprint on all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jesse Garfield Pittman and Everline Mann Pittman; her beloved siblings Daisy Davis, Victoria Goodwin, Pauline Johnson, Lily Alston, Jesse Pittman, Calvin Pittman, Earl Pittman, James Pittman, David Pittman, and Herbert Kelly Pittman; her cherished son, Patrick Stevenson Wright, who passed in March 1999; and her devoted husband, Wilson Wright, Sr., who passed in June 2016.

Medicia Marie Wright peacefully transitioned on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at Windsor Grove Health and Rehabilitation.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory her son, Wilson Wright, Jr. (Julia); her grandchildren, Ashley Walker, Travis Parker, Jr. (Chewanda), and Joshua Parker; her great-grandson, Kingston Parker; her daughter-in-law, Arlene Wright; her godson, Ronald Goodwin; her sister-in-law, Fannie Mabrey of Suffolk; her brother-in-law, Robert Anderson of Suffolk; her dear and faithful friend, Lucille Bannister of Bronx, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and friends.

Medicia’s life was a quiet testimony of faith lived through service, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God and family. She faced every season with strength rooted in Christ, trusting Him completely and walking boldly in her calling. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy continues in the lives she touched and the love she so freely gave. Her life reminds us that faith, when lived fully, leaves a legacy that time cannot erase.

As we remember Medicia and the life she lived, we hold close the scripture that guided her faith and strengthened her through every season.

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13
