Raiford Hugo Hunter, Jr.

March 26, 1946 — October 23, 2019

Raiford Hugo Hunter, Jr. 73, of Honeysuckle Lane, Chesapeake, Virginia transitioned Wednesday, October 23, 2019. He was the son of the late Martha Phelps Lawrence Hunter and Raiford Hunter, Sr. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, James Eldridge Lawrence. He was the Southwestern High School class of 1964 Salutatorian, he matriculated to Virginia State University and received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education. He served in the United States Army from 1969-1972 and had tours in Germany and Korea. Hugo retired in 1999 from the City of Norfolk Department of Social Services. And he continued his education receiving a certificate from the American Institute of Banking. Raiford was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee, Adult Sunday School Teacher, Budget Chairman, Men's Fellowship, and sung in the Men's Chorus. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Cynthia Hill Hunter, formerly of Disputanta, Virginia; daughter, Laurice Shaneka Hunter of Atlanta, GA; son, Lo (Laurence) Hunter (Jar'Kila)of Charlotte, N.C; two sisters, Ann L. Hunter Malone (Richard) of Chesapeake, Virginia and Dr. H. Sharmaine Hunter-Boykin (Dwight) of Suffolk, VA; three brothers, Rev. Wilbert L. Lawrence of Franklin, VA, Johnnie L. Lawrence (Jessie) of Suffolk, VA,and Coolidge D. Hunter (Brenda) of Suffolk, VA; four grandchildren, Lauren Hunter, Zoey Hunter, Ahdae Hunter, and Milo Hunter; brother-in-law, Robert W. Hill (Eleanor) of Chesterfield; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. A visitation with family will be held noon, Monday, October 28, 2019 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with the celebration of life starting at 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. Rev. Dr. William L. Lang will deliver the message of comfort. Rev. Dr. Joseph H. Goode is Pastor Emeritus.
