On Thursday, April 27, Pernell Lee Mayfield. departed this life at Sentara Obici Hospital. He was born in Nansemond County on May 16, 1947 to the late Sylvester Mayfield, Sr. & Alease D. Mayfield. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Mayfield, son Corey Mayfield, sisters Shirley Edwards & Ella Mae Brown & brothers Sylvester Mayfield Jr. & Callandus Mayfield. He was a graduate of Southwestern High School. After high school, Pernell decided to serve his country and joined the United States Army. He had a chance to experience and tour the world by traveling to Korea & Vietnam throughout the Cold War. He was a Honorably Discharged Veteran. He was an active member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. In church, he served on the Usher Board. Being an Usher, he would make sure he met you with a smile and a firm handshake. Pernell loved his family and enjoyed attending every family occasion. If you ever encountered Pernell and you said something that he was in agreement with his favorite line would be “Solid Solid”. He leaves to cherish and perpetuate his memory: four sisters, Carnell Goodman, Linda Little, Everne Joe and Vivian Knight; three brothers, Earl Mayfield, Daniel Mayfield (Glenda) and Robert Mayfield; one brother-in-law, Carroll Brown; two god-daughters, Elisa Moore (Michael) & Shawnreika Brown; special nephew, Aaron R. Joe; a close friend Minister Reginald Harvey; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Piney Grove Baptist Church, 4901 Deer Path Road., Suffolk.
