In the late evening of January 9,2021, God dispatched His angels to usher His child home. Beverly 'BB' Lafayette Backus left with them to go to his heavenly home. BB was the son of Laura Ashe Carruth and Grady Lafayette Backus. He was born in Suffolk, Virginia on December 8, 1946. Soon after his birth, he moved with his mother to Philadelphia Pa., returning to Suffolk when he was about twelve years of age. He attended East Suffolk High School. Mr. Backus was an excellent roofer for over fifty years. He was also an accomplished carpenter and could build most anything. He was extremely knowledgeable and could speak with confidence on many historical topics as well as current events. He enjoyed sharing his wisdom and humor with friends and family. BB loved God, family and friends, especially his friends in the Saratoga borough of Suffolk where he spent much of his time. Mr. Backus was preceded in death by his mother and father. His wife Laferm Backus. Two brothers, James 'Chubby' Carruth and Mark 'Omar' Carruth. He leaves to cherish his memories two children, Latina Backus of York Pennsylvania and Lance Backus of Maryland. One grandchild, Kameron Jackson of Maryland. One sister, Glynda McDougall of Baltimore Maryland. Five brothers, Patrick 'Pat' Carruth (Marcella) of New Jersey, Gene Alton Holloway (Sharon) of Suffolk, Gary Backus of Brentwood California, Michael Agent of Baltimore Maryland, James Vernon Backus of Phoenix Arizona. One uncle and aunt, Clarence and Elizabeth Ash of Suffolk, A special friend, Tyrone Ballard of Suffolk VA And a special cousin Gregory Ash of Virginia Beach, Virginia. A celebration of life will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 18, 2021 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home.
