Mildred Daye

October 23, 1938 — September 2, 2024

MILDRED’S rewarding pilgrimage journey here on earth ended on Monday, September 2, 2024 at 10:57am at her home in Suffolk, Virginia surrounded by loved ones.

MILDRED was the loving, caring, and sharing daughter of the late Warrick Jackson and Inez Elizabeth Wiggins Walden.

MILDRED repented her sins, accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age; was baptized by Rev. Dr. Galvin R. Daughtrey, and joined the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 6100 Holy Neck Road, Suffolk, Virgina.

MILDRED attended Nansemond County Training School, Nansemond County - where she graduated June 1955 as Valedictorian of her class. She furthered her education at Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia and Cortez Peters Business College, Baltimore, Maryland where she received a degree in Stenography/Business Administration - May 1959 with Honors.

MILDRED met the love of her life, James O. Daye of Heathsville, Virginia, in 1955, when she was a student at Virginia State University. They dated five (5) years and were married May 29, 1960 in Baltimore, Maryland by her uncle Rev. Dr. Gilmer Walden. To this happy union - two (2) sons were born - James Ricardo Daye and Gregory Theron Daye.

MILDRED was employed by the Southampton County Public Schools Division where she served in administrative positions - climbing the ladder of success. She set her goal and prayed sincerely to be the Administrative Secretary to the Division Superintendent. Her prayer was answered. She served as Administrative Secretary for three (3) Superintendents - Dr. John H. Harville, Dr. Howard E. Wainwright, and Dr. Charles E. Turner. Mildred believed, achieved, and succeeded during her happy employment with the Division. She was honored with numerous retirement awards, plaques, and certificates after thirty-seven (37) years of service in June 2003.

MILDRED loved her church and church family. She enjoyed praising her Jesus and extending her gratitude to Him for the many bountiful blessings bestowed upon her during her many fruitful and rewarding years. She served well in so many capacities in the church - Secretary of Sunday School, Sunday School Teacher, member of the Senior Ushers Ministry, member of the Mass Choir, President - Christian Women Fellowship Ministry, Chairwoman - 80 Plus Seniors, Church Clerk, Deaconess, and served on many committees - sharing her expertise. She was well known in the community, as she was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

MILDRED was predeceased by her husband, James O. Daye, and her older brother, Willis Weaver Walden. Precious memories will always linger with her two (2) sons - James Ricardo Daye (Christine) of Orlando, Florida, and Gregory Theron Daye (Renee) of Richmond, Virginia; four (4) grandchildren - Jaime Daye, Jada Daye, Isabella Daye, and Emilio Daye; and three (3) great grandchildren - Jordan Bennett, Jahvon Simms, and Zaria Harrigan. Mildred is also survived by her dear sister - Delphenia W. Brandon, and cherished brother - Warrick Kenneth Walden; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, special classmates and numerous “forget-me-not” friends; a “Spiritual son and daughter” Rev. Dr. & Mrs. William L. Lang; loving caregiver - Mrs. Latina H. Goodman, and devoted niece Sophia D. Williams.

So now the laborious, devoted, trusted and honored woman, MILDRED, has finished her course. Mt. Sinai Baptist Church has lost a faithful member, and the community bids farewell to a caring neighbor, a kind, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, relative, and lifelong friend.
