Michael Oswald Whitfield

On Monday, April 6, 2020 at approximately 11:37AM the death angel arrived at Sentara Obici Hospital and took our beloved brother, cousin and friend Michael Oswald Whitfield, better known as Big Mike. He was 63 years old. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert White Whitfield and Emma Marie Copeland Whitfield; and a brother, Roderick Costello Whitfield. Michael was the third child born in Nansemond County, Virginia on September 18, 1956 to the late Robert White Whitfield and Emma Marie Copeland Whitfield. He attended Nansemond County Public Schools and later Suffolk City Schools. Michael worked in various occupations, settling with Smithfield Foods, Inc. until his retirement. He loved church and family and was known to lead many hymns in community and church choirs to include the Holland community choir “The Voices of Hope.” Michael is survived by his oldest brother Aubrey (Diane), youngest brother Phillip, sister Robin (Clarence), sister Donna, and his “Baby Sister” Karen. He is also survived by his only niece Patrice, oldest nephew Brandon, and youngest nephew Jordan, as well as a host of friends -especially his special friend Loray Parker. He was a proud Member of Zion Community Church in Northern Suffolk, and faithfully served in the male chorus until his health began to fail him.
