Mazie Garris

December 11, 1928 — November 8, 2025

Mazie Garris peacefully departed this life November 8, 2025. Affectionately known as “Hon, short for honey” “Mother,” “Nana,” and “Auntie,” to her many loved ones, she was born December 11, 1928 to the late Willy and Estell Ransom in Jackson, NC. Mazie is predeceased by her stepfather, George Hall, sisters, Callie Ransom, and Grace Bernard, brother Scott Ransom, sisters-in-law Dozine Vinson, Katheryn Porch, Selma Smith and Mildred Bell, brothers-in-law Robert Garris, and Cecil Bernard, and her beloved husband of 65 years, Boatman Garris.

At an early age, Mazie displayed a deep appreciation for education and curiosity for life beyond North Carolina’s borders. Shortly after completing her education in the North Carolina school system, she met the love of her life, Boatman Garris. The two were married June 30, 1953. The stunning couple eventually moved to New York City, where Mazie remained a lifelong resident and prominent figure in the Striver’s Row community. The couple’s blessed union spanned an amazing 65 years and gave way to the birth of a most beloved son, Marty Garris. Mazie worked as a school crossing guard for many years. She fully embraced motherhood and because of her gentle, nurturing nature also served as a mother figure to many. She was most at peace attending church services at Metropolitan Baptist Church, where she was a faithful and active member of the usher board until her health began to decline. Another great source of joy was being surrounded by family and friends and going on thrift shopping adventures.

Left to mourn her passing is her devoted son Marty Garris (Gloria) NY; beloved stepson Ronald Jackson (NC); grandchildren, Jessica Joseph (Shamir) FL; Asia Garris (NY); great grandchildren Imani Joseph and Nolani Joseph (FL); nieces, Essie Edwards (Phillip) VA; Mazie Blount (Alvin), VA; Marcella Elliot (FL); Joan Vinson (NC); Millie Smith (NY), nephews Demetrius Bernard (VA); Willie Smith, Jr. (NY), Elijah Vinson (NY) and a host of great nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Mazie Garris was beautiful both outward and within. Her laughter, grace, and warm spirit filled any room she entered.

A celebration of life will be held 11:00am, Saturday, November 22, 2025 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. Ms. Garris will be laid to rest at Carver Memorial Cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
