Mary "Vergie" Louise Artis, 84, of Suffolk transitioned Friday, April 12, 2019 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Elnora Hoggard Artis and James Robert Artis. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen Artis-Wiggins; two brothers, Robert Lee Artis and William Berlin Artis; grandmother, Mary E. Hoggard; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Artis and Shirley Artis. Vergie attended Nansemond County Training School and retired in 1998 after numerous years of faithful and dedicated work from Birdsong Peanut Company. She was a member of Holland Mission Church where she sung in the choir and was a member of the hospitality committee. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Barbara A. Barnes; a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family, and friends. A visitation with family will be held 6-7p.m. Friday, April 19, 2019 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held noon Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Laurel Hill U.C.C. 8001 S. Quay Road, Suffolk, Virginia. Rev. Freddie Hines will deliver the message of comfort. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
