Mariah A. Bowers, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great- great -grandmother and friend, peacefully departed this life on October 2, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on January 29, 1933, in Southampton, VA, she was a true beacon of love and strength for all who had the privilege of knowing her. Throughout her life, Mariah devoted herself to her family, always putting their needs above her own. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support made everyone feel cherished and valued. As a passionate cook, she found joy in preparing favorite dishes for her family, especially during the holidays when each child had their special request. Affectionately known as “Momma Rye” and “Grandma Rye,” she was a wonderful mother, always there when her family needed her most, offering wisdom, love, and unwavering support. Mariah leaves behind a legacy of love, remembered by her Sons: Todd Bowers (Janet), Mark Bowers, Jeffrey Chase, special sons Culon Dashiell and Victor Wood. Daughters: Donya Clark(Vernon), and Andrea Bowers along with two grandsons Theodore Bowers (Princess) and Todd Waters (Chanta) who was raised as her sons who brought her immense joy. Her grandchildren: Dominique Whitehurst, Daisha, Deajah and Maryiah Clark, Chelsea Wood, Syncere, Aiden and Mista Waters, Bryce, Chance and Ava Chapman, Kiarra Haynes and Jaylin Diggs. Her great-great-granddaughter, Malanii Hawkins will also carry her memory forward. She is fondly remembered by her dear friend Sadie Davis, her special niece Huntis Faye Chapman, and her goddaughter LaTisha Haynes. Mariah was preceded in death by her mother, Daisy Sumblin; her brother, Hyland Brown; her sister, Huntis Lee Chase; and her beloved children, Theodore (Teddy) Bowers Jr. and Melissa Bowers. She leaves behind a host of loving family members and devoted friends who will cherish her memory. Our mother will be deeply missed but will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.
A celebration of life will be held 1:00pm, Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Shiloh Baptist Church, Windsor, VA. Mrs. Bowers will be laid to rest at Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
