Margaret V. Picott was a loving and revered Aunt, Sister, Godmother and Friend. She departed this life to be with the Lord on March 9, 2022 a the age of 96. God gently removed all suffering and pain as she transitioned at her residence in Brooklyn, NY. She was born on January 7, 1926 in Gates, N. C. to Linwood and Eliza Collins. She was one of 11 children and attended school in Nansemond County, VA. Margaret was preceded in death by her siblings Leno Parker, Chester Collins, Oscar Collins, Mary F. Lawrence, Mardia Collins, Ernestine Drayton, Mills Collins, William M. Collins, and Ralph Collins. As a young woman, she moved to New York City where she would live closer to her late sisters Ernestine Drayton and Mary Lawrence. She worked in the Garment District of Manhattan as a hand painter of textiles and was a member of AFLCIO Garment Workers Union. It was in NY where she wed her late husband, James Edward Picott of Holland, VA. Although she didn't have any children, her motherly spirit extended onto her nieces and great nieces, many of whom sought her out for her wisdom and care. Margaret was an independent spirit and a woman of faith. She had a strong devotion to Christ and was a dedicated member of Bridge Street AME Church in Brooklyn, NY where she remained a member for over fifty years. Margaret enjoyed cooking and felt it important to prepare her own meals as a healthier option. Her family loved the special touch that she put into her preparations as they would request everything from her apple fritters to her chocolate cakes. She also enjoyed creating framed portraits from jigsaw puzzles and was an avid walker as keeping fit was important to her. She frequented the Brooklyn Heights Promenade as it was her favorite local spot to sit and enjoy the views of the city. She is loved by her family, as her vitality and determination to live life on her own terms has served as inspiration for many throughout the years. Margaret was a light in every heart she touched. She would do anything asked of her for her family and friends. A bright star has been extinguished but the light now lives on in the hearts and minds of those who loved her. She is survived by her sister Ethel J. Langston, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A viewing will be held 12-7 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2022 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel. Bishop Charlie Collins will deliver the message of comfort.
