Lottie Fenwick Smallwood

Lottie Fenwick Smallwood a solider in the army of the Lord; a dependable loving family member and friend.

Lottie was born to the late Mr. & Mrs.  Theodore Johnson. She attended Mary E. Estes, East Suffolk Elementary & High School. Lottie also attended Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA. She is survived by her son Ray Thomas Fenwick (Valerie), two stepchildren Kay Smallwood-Harden and Jay Smallwood. Two sisters Lillan Sykes-Maddrey and Laura Goodman. Two godsons Kenneth Avery Miller and Byron Wiggins. A host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lottie was an entrepreneur dedicated to providing serves that made a difference in the community.    She was the first Black women privately owned privately licensed day care center – “Youngland Day Care Center in Suffolk, VA.  She provided “Little Red Bus” services for Head Start and private kindergarten programs for the City of Suffolk. Lottie was a co-owner and operator of Fenwick Detective Agency. She serves as a Coordinator for Suffolk Early Childhood Commission (ECDC). She was a Adjunct Lecturer at Tidewater Community College. She was awarded the first “Tender Loving Care Award” given by the Tidewater Association. She was a lifetime member of the National Association for the  Young Children (NAEYC).

Lottie was a member of New Mt. Joy Food for Living Ministries, under the leadership of Elder Terrell O Wiggins.  She served many capacities in Church which included the Hospitality Committee, Women’s Department, Secretary of Deaconess Board, WPW Gospel Choir and Chairman of the Scholarship Ministries. She was a member of the church Executive Board and Church Trustee.

Viewing will be held from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2024 at New Mt. Joy Food for Living Ministries. She will be laid to rest in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
