Joyce W. Bowers

On September 16, 2021, Joyce Earline Warren Bowers passed away peacefully and joined her late husband Kenneth Day Bowers in Heaven. She was born to the late Lloyd Wendell Warren and Pennie Howell Warren Lane, and to this union five children were born. Gladys W. Chapman, Odelle W. Ricks, Bernice W. Hamlin, and Olga W. Hardy preceded her in death. Born on June 6, 1933, Joyce grew up in Southampton County and attended the historic Hayden High School in Courtland, Virginia and Laurel Hill United Church of Christ (Holland, Virginia) and Beulah Land African Methodist Episcopal Church (Berlin, Virginia) throughout her youth. She followed in her older sisters’ footsteps and attended Virginia State University, left and married Kenneth Day Bowers on June 20, 1952, raised a family, and returned to complete her degree at Norfolk State University and a master’s at Virginia Commonwealth University. Joyce was very active in her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, Young Farmer’s Club (Zuni, Virginia), and a faithful member and deacon of Gilfield Baptist Church in Ivor, Virginia. She touched many lives as a kindergarten teacher for many years in Southampton County Public Schools. She leaves to mourn her passing, five children, Wanda Samuel Wise, Kenneth Wendell Bowers, Shelby Wayne Bowers (Tamni), Myron Timothy Bowers (Shelly), and Rodney Blake Bowers (Thomas); nine grandchildren, LaTonya, Kenita, LeRon, Charyce, Janaia, Darlington, Briana, Sade, and Krystal; eleven great grandchildren, one God-Child (Bermina), nephews, nieces, several adopted families, and a host of other relatives and friends. Franklin Tri-County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated honors Joyce Bowers in Omega Omega farewell service.
