Joyce Ann Stagg

Joyce Ann Stagg, 81, of Pearl Street, transitioned August 28, 2024 at her residence. She was born on December 6, 1942 in Suffolk, Virginia. During her earlier years she was a member of Tabernacle Christian Church where she was baptized. She later joined First Baptist Church Mahan. She was a member of the Music Ministry, Health and Wholeness Ministry, Hospitality Ministry and the Greeters Ministry. She was also an active member of the LaMercett Nurses Organization.

 While living in Washington DC, she started nursing school and married Ernest Stagg in 1973. Upon graduating from nursing school, she worked at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 2005.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Stagg, parents Charles and Fannie Freeman, a son Duane Antonio Melton, brothers Garris Freeman Sr. and Charles Freeman Jr., and brother-in-law Andrew Paul Sr.

 To cherish Ms. Stagg’s memory are her daughter, Donna Melton; two sons Stephen Melton and Keith M. Stagg; two sisters Dr. F. Charlene Freeman-Coker and Sandra M. Paul; one sister-in-law Shirley Freeman; four grandchildren Megan Melton, Keith E. Stagg Jr., Kaylah Stagg and Kareem Stagg; two nieces Maria Freeman and Stacey Turner (Christopher); nephews Garris Freeman Jr, Dwayne Reid (Sharon), Andrew Paul Jr. (Shani), Gregory Paul (Tina), and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 3p-7p. A celebration of life will be held on September 6, 2024 at First Baptist Church, 112 Mahan Street at 12 noon.  She will be laid to rest at Nansemond- Suffolk Cemetery. 

 Repass will be held at the Kings Fork Community House.
