Joseph Willie Powell

Mr. Joseph Willie Powell a native of Suffolk, VA was called home to be with the Lord on April 28, 2020 at Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY. He was the son of the late Henry Ennis Powell and Beatrice Selma Powell. He was born and raised in Suffolk, VA. He attended Mary Estee Elementary School and the East Suffolk High School. He was employed at Planters, Suffolk, VA he later relocated to Brooklyn, NY in 1969. He worked for the NYC Board of Education and later went to work for the NYC Transit Authority. He was employed there for 37 years until his retirement in 2011. Joseph was a hardworking man and loved his family dearly, he was always willing and able to help his family. He is survived by his children, Angela Powell-Fields (Chris), David Kenny (Ebony), Eric Foca (Yvonne), Nona Powell, Jason Laltoz (Monica), Jahazzia Staggers-Powell, and Bridgett Hayes-recently deceased; six brothers, Ben Johnson, Roland Powell (Diana), Lloyd Powell (Iola), Arthur Powell, Russell Powell, Larry Powell (Stephanie), and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Powell; he also leaves behind his grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins and many friends. A viewing will be held 1-7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 2020 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
