On November 3, 2025, Johnnie Cherry Spruill Sr. departed this life while at his place of residence, The East Pavilion Nursing Home, Franklin, VA. He was a native of Suffolk, VA born on August 12, 1935 in Bertie County, NC., to the late Amos Spruill and Inez Cherry Spruill. In addition to his parents Johnny was preceded in death by his brother Frank Spruill and his sisters, Frances Louise Fordham, Lenora White, Mamie Lee, Garrett Miller, Ann Moore and Inez Bright, three sons, Tony, Donald, Johnny (June) and daughter Bernice, two grandsons Bennie Wood III and Rufus (Scooter) Artis.
He worked on the farm for Morris Holland for about 70 years. He loved fishing, playing cards and playing his lottery numbers. He was known for having yard sales and collecting junk and going to the junk yard. He was a lone sharp and he was all about making a dollar. He was a wonderful husband and father.
He leaves to behind cherished memories, his wife of 75 years, Louise Spruill, two daughters, Betty Jones (Shelly Lee) of Holland, VA., Mable Goodwin (Clifton) of Windsor, VA., three sons, Raymond Spruill of Suffolk, VA., Leon Spruill (Apostle Dr. Tonya) of Elizabeth City, NC., and John Spruill (Malinda) of Portsmouth, VA., one sister, Bernice Mumford of Hookerton, N.C., one brother-in-law, James Futrell (Mary Louise) of Ahoskie, NC., a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family would like to specially thank East Pavilion Nursing Home staff and nurses for taking care of Johnnie Cherry Spruill, Sr.
A viewing will be held 2-6 p.m. Friday, Saturday, November 7, 2025 at Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2025 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in Southview Cemetery in Franklin. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
