John K. Halsey, 58, passed away on Monday, August 21, 2023, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. He was born on August 9, 1965, to Catherine Pegram Halsey of Suffolk and Fred Matthews; both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Yvonne Regina Halsey; sister, Roxanne Matthews Johnson; nephew, Darryl Matthews; grandmother, Laura Halsey; and his Aunt Daisy Pegram-Watford. John graduated from Suffolk High School in Suffolk, VA and in 1983, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as YN1 Chief Petty Officer Halsey where he served until retirement in 2003. His last employment was with the City of Suffolk and Navy Gateway Inns and Suites. On his time off, he enjoyed fishing, basketball, and the Dallas Cowboys. He loved being around positive people and especially around his family and friends. He leaves his beloved children to cherish his memory; daughters, Tiffenee Rena Brown Taliaferro (Jamal, Sr.), Johnetta Yolanda Brown, and Yvette Latoya Halsey Alexander (Ronshaun, Sr.) all of Newport News, VA. He leaves his beloved siblings; sisters, Lauretta Halsey and Diane Matthews; brothers, Rodney Matthews and Richard Matthews, all from Suffolk, VA. John also leaves behind 10 beautiful grandchildren, his two nieces, Kentrina Halsey and Khadijah Halsey both from Suffolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and loyal and dedicated friends. A public viewing will be held 12 Noon - 7:00pm, Thursday, August 31, 2023 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. A celebration of life will be held 12 Noon, Friday, September 1, 2023 at Antioch United Church of Christ. He will be laid to rest Mt.
