John “Jackie” Henry Mayo, Sr., 70 transitioned Saturday, January 16 at his residence surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Maude Perry (Hersey); Father, Leroy Williams (Lucille); Grandmother, Lillie Rawls; Brothers, Woodrow Scarborough and Warren Wells; Sister Barbara Williams Jarrell (willie). John, affectionately known as “Jackie” was born February 11, 1950 in Nansemond County to the late Maude Perry and Leroy Williams. He attended Suffolk Public Schools. He served in the United States Army (with a honorable discharge) and worked for the Suffolk Fire Department. Jackie worked at Smithfield Packing and Commonwealth Storage where he retired after 15 years. He joined Balm of Gilead Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. Jackie was the monarch of the family, he lived a full and happy life. He was personality and stylish clothes. He enjoyed cooking and making others laugh. If you were any kin to Jackie he would definitely make it know to the world. He loved and adored all of his family. He leaves to cherish his memory 2 sons, Andre Mayo of Virginia Beach and John H. Mayo, Jr. of Chesapeake. 2 Daughters Twala Thompson (Vonley) and Jonae Mayo of Portsmouth. Eight Sisters Peggy Wilson (Vernon), Lillian Mayo, Gloria Mayo Clark (Russell), Gwendolyn Yvette Owens, Cheryl Debraux (Curtis), Wanda Perry Harvey (Paul) all of Suffolk, Angelia Brown (Albert) of Waverly, and Lujeania Williams Newton (Alonzo) of New York. Five Brother William Gary Mayo (Carolyn), Hersey Mayo (Barbara) both of Suffolk, Marvin Mayo (Shelia) of Portsmouth, Samuel Lee Williams (Christine) of New York, and Henry Wyatt (Betty) of Suffolk. Host of grandchildren, One Aunt Emma King, Special Friend Judy Johnson, god Daughter Yoni Wyatt Blount, godson Marcus Simmons. A host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. A public viewing will be held 4-7p.m. Monday, January 25, 2021 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. Due to Covid-19 Restrictions, a private celebration of life will be held Tuesday, January 26, 2021 and he will be laid to rest Friday, January 29, 2021. Bishop A.S. Hall, Sr. will deliver the message of comfort. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
