John Calvin West, Sr.

John Calvin West Sr. 73, aka “Koo Kitchen”, departed this earthly life into the awaiting arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 15, 2021 at Sentara Obici Hospital. John was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA where he served as an usher and in many other capacities. He was a dedicated volunteer at many of the local food banks, and often delivered food to members of the community. John was known for his big heart and his willingness to give to those in need, and to many who asked. His willingness to serve and his compassion for the elderly was shown through many kind deeds. John was known for going door to door to check on the elderly in the community. He also made sure that their trash cans were pulled to the streets on trash day, and that they received copies of the local newspaper. John was preceded in death by his wife, the late Mrs. Barbara West and his parents, the late Mr. John Collins and the late Mrs. Emily Mae Covington. He leaves to cherish his memory: one son John “Calvin” West Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, Willie Covington Jr. (Vivian) of Chesapeake, VA and Clarence Covington Sr. (Lynn) also of Chesapeake, VA; four sisters, Joan Watford (Ernest) (whom he had a special bond with) of Suffolk, VA, Betty Dixon (Keith) of Raleigh, NC, Jacqueline Milteer of Chesapeake, VA, and Faye Bradley (Carroll) of Chester, VA; a special aunt, Barbara West Copeland of Suffolk, VA; and a host of other aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A viewing will be held 12:00 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2021 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2021 at Lakeview Missionary Baptist Church, 635 Brook Avenue, Suffolk, Virginia. He will be laid to rest in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
