JoAnn Parker, 78, of 639 First Avenue, peacefully passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2024, in her home. Mrs. Parker was born on May 28, 1946, to the late Geraldine Edwards and George Hodges of Suffolk, Virginia.
Known for her warm smile and generous spirit, JoAnn was a pillar of the Suffolk community. For over 40 years, JoAnn, alongside her husband, Ray, dedicated her life to fostering, opening her heart and home to more than 100 children in need. She was not only a mother and grandmother to her own family but also a nurturing figure to countless others who sought refuge and love. Her unwavering support and compassion provided stability and hope to many, making her a cherished second mother to those she fostered.
JoAnn’s commitment extended beyond her role as a foster parent. Serving as Vice President of the Suffolk Foster Parent Association, she advocated tirelessly for the rights and needs of foster children. Her leadership and passion for improving the foster care system touched the lives of many and inspired her peers and community members alike.
She was a friend to all, bringing joy and kindness to everyone she met. Her legacy of love and compassion will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
JoAnn was a devoted member of Galatians United Church of Christ in Suffolk, Virginia, where she expressed her faith through her unwavering commitment to the church community. She served as a deaconess, acted as the Sunday school treasurer, and was an enthusiastic member of the Unity Choir. Her love for the Lord radiated in all her actions, inspiring those around her to deepen their own faith.
Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ray Parker Sr., and her eldest daughter, Erika Denise Cole.
Mrs. Parker leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Eloise Folks (husband Tony); her brother, Melvin Bates Sr.; and her cherished children: Cordelia Spencer-Jones, Pamela Wilson (husband Michael), Rhonda Poole (husband Harold), LaTanya Hamlin (husband Clyde), Ray Parker Jr. (wife Sherena), London Mullen, Phoenix Long (Rolonda Carter), Lakita Savage, John Ruffin, Samuel Parker (wife Keisha), and Ashley Parker. She also leaves behind a treasured host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, foster children, nieces, and nephews.
JoAnn’s kindness and unwavering dedication will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.
A public viewing will be held 1-4pm, Sunday, October 13, 2024 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. A celebration of life will be held 1:00pm, Monday, October 14, 2024 at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Mrs. Parker will be laid to rest at Carver Memorial Cemetery.
