James Smith, 79, of Seminole Drive, Suffolk, Virginia transitioned Monday, May 10, 2021 at his residence. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Mary and Raymond Smith. He was a graduate of East Suffolk High School class of '62. He served in the United States Army and held the honor of Sharpshooter. He retired in 2005 after 39 years of faithful and dedicated service as a Welder in Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock. He was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church where he served on the Ushers' Board. James leaves to cherish his loving memories his wife, Bettie S. Smith of Suffolk, VA; two daughters, Sherry D. Ware of Columbia, MD and Benita R. Chinn of Marietta, GA; two grandchildren, Janai S. Ware of Columbia, MD and Bryce James Chinn of Marietta, GA; goddaughter, Loretta Wilkins; three brothers, Raymond Smith, Earnest Smith (Gail), Nathaniel Smith (Elizabeth); two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Turner and Brenda Smith; three brothers-in-law, Charles Slaughter (Lois Ann), Reverend Lemuel Greene (Judy) and Clyde Edmond (Mary); devoted cousin, Ida Golden; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A viewing will be held 12-6 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 2021 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 17, 2021 at New Calvary Baptist Church. He will be laid to rest in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
