James Seward Brown Sr.

God, in His infinite wisdom, called James Seaward Brown Sr., age 88, of Suffolk, Virginia, from labor to reward on May 22, 2026 at Windsor Grove Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Greeleville, South Carolina, a community in Montgomery County, to the late Aaron Smith Brown and Rebecca Brown.

Affectionately known as “Bubbie” or “Brown”, James grew up in Montgomery County, South Carolina, where he graduated from Greeleville High School. He later completed brick masonry training at the South Carolina Area Trade School in Denmark, South Carolina, earning his diploma on May 23, 1958.

James was a skilled and dedicated craftsman who took great pride in his work. He began his career with Wilson’s Masonry Company before establishing his own business, Brown’s Masonry.

James leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 67 years, Vivian Costley Brown; his children, James S. Brown Jr., Cynthia R. Brown of Indian Head, MD, and Antonio T. Brown (Virginia) of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Pearlie Carroll of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins, extended family, and dear friends.

A viewing will be held 2-7 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held noon, Friday, June 5, 2026 at Rising St. James P.H.C. He will be laid to rest in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family has entrusted Crocker Funeral Home, Inc with professional services rendered with dignity, compassion and care.
