Irene R Diggs, 90 of 9182 Sadler Road, Wakefield, VA passed away peacefully in her home Tuesday, February 18, 2020. She was born August 22, 1929 in Southampton County. Irene was the daughter of the late Walter Roberts and Willie Mae Patterson. At the age of 12 she sought the guidance of God through baptism at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Later joining Gilfield Baptist Church with her late husband, Willie Diggs Sr. At Gilfield Baptist Church she held several positions: leader of the Junior Ushers and was a member of the Senior Usher Board. She was a Trustee for 37 years and for 34 years was the church’s Treasurer. She served on the board of Social Service in Courtland,Virginia, and a member of voter registration for Southampton County and was one of the co-founder of The Young Farmers Club. She was instrumental in the beautification of the interior and exterior of the church in the 90’s. Irene had a passion for nature as was evident in her love for gardening. You only had to look at the beauty of her flower gardens. She also was one of the best cooks. Whether it was her famous lemon pies or her delicious homemade rolls that was loved by all. She is preceded in death by her late husband Willie L. Diggs, Sr.and her son Willie L. Diggs, Jr. She leaves five children Larry (Joyce) Diggs Ivor, Va; Stella Diggs Bowie Md; Barbara Diggs Marlboro MA; Milton (Jeannie) Diggs Sedley, Va; Alan (Laverne) Diggs Sedley, Va. Her sister Alice Blowe Franklin, Va ;her uncle Thomas Crocker, Ivor, Va. ; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives. A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Gilfield Baptist Church, Ivor, Virginia. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
