Inez Virginia Copeland

November 7, 1926 — July 8, 2020

Inez Virginia Copeland, 93 years old, passed away peacefully at home among family on July 8, 2020. She was born November 7, 1926 to the Late Charlie Reid and Erma Reid. Inez received her formal education in the Suffolk Public School System. She was a revered cook in various establishments around Suffolk and was also employed at Birdsong Peanut Factory for several years until her retirement. Mother Copeland accepted Christ many years ago. She was a faithful member of Little Mount Zion Baptist Church until leaving to assist her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Maurice Reid Scott and Bishop Fred Scott, in their ministry at Word For Living Gospel Fellowship Center. She was dedicated to service and was active in several church groups including the Usher Board, the Pastor’s Appreciation Committee, the Missionary Board and the Mothers Board. Mother Copeland was also blessed with many talents. She had a beautiful voice which she often used to lead devotion. In addition to being vocally talented, Mother Copeland was a gifted storyteller with a very good memory. She was the family historian and those who loved her delighted in the historical recollections she gave. She will be remembered for her songs, her retelling of the family’s history and her style of dress which always included her wearing a hat. She is proceeded in death by her loving husband, Wallace O. Copeland; devoted daughter, Maurice Reid Scott and Son-In-Law Fred Scott; five sisters, Martha Lee Reid, Erma Reid, Maedell Williams, Arletha Foreman and Bernice Foreman; four brothers, Thomas William Reid, James “Titi” Reid, Johnny Leon Reid, and Emmit Reid. Inez leaves to cherish her memory three brothers, Charlie Edward Reid Sr., George Lee Reid Sr. and William Henry Reid Sr. (Lavern) all of Suffolk VA; Six grandchildren, Martha Parker (Alvin) of Suffolk, VA; Sherry Rowe of Suffolk, VA; Fred Scott, Jr. (Jacqueline) of Corapeake, NC; Felicia Carroll (Emmitt) of Suffolk, VA; Shelley Scott of Suffolk, VA and Robert Scott (Rosalind) of Atlanta, GA; nineteen great-grandchildren, sixteen great-great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, god-children and friends. A viewing will be held 3-7 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2020 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel. She will be laid to rest in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
