In loving memory of a remarkable soul, who found joy and strength in God’s loving embrace, and mirrored that love in her zest for life. Her faith was her compass, her enthusiasm was infectious. May her spirit forever dance in the eternal light of God’s love, reminding us to cherish each day as a gift. Ecclesiastes 12:7 says, “and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, our Savior called His beloved child, Helen Virginia Patterson Bryant, to live with Him in Paradise where she claimed her resting place. Our mother was born on September 16, 1937, to the late Benjamin Patterson, Sr. and Esther Forney Patterson in Norfolk, Virginia. She was married to Ashley Bryant and after living in San Bernardino, California and Honolulu, Hawaii, they relocated to Hampton, Virginia. They were blessed with two children, Kenneth and Kimberly. She was a member of Queen Street Baptist Church for over 30 years and served on the Sick and Shut-in Hospital Ministry. She was preceded in death by her brother Earl Patterson, her sister Doris Spencer, and daughter-in-law Sabrina Bryant. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children Kenneth W. Bryant, Kimberly B. Mayo and her husband Keith E. Mayo; grandchildren Krystal McRae, Kenneth Bryant Jr., and Kaylynn I. Mayo; siblings Barbara Holloman, Benjamin Patterson, Jr., Jane Atkins and her husband Sherman Atkins, Ernestine Hammonds-Slade; and a large extended family. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and was a proud member of the Honor Society. She attended one year of college at Norfolk State University. She began her career as a secretary in the federal government and was the Executive Secretary for the President of Thomas Nelson Community College. Her interests included playing card games, reading the daily newspaper, solving crossword puzzles, bingo, shopping, and wordsmithing. A memorial service will be held 10:30am, Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Queen Street Baptist Church, 98 N. Armistead Avenue Hampton, VA 23669.
