Gracie M. Ray

July 28, 1933 — August 8, 2019

Gracie Marsh Ray, a native of Hertford County, N.C. transitioned on Thursday, August 8, 2019, comforted by the presence of her family in the home of her sister. She was educated in Hertford County and graduated from Robert L. Vann High School. She was an entrepreneur with her husband in New York before they decided to move back to North Carolina. While there she discovered the love of caring for others which is why she became a devoted nurse's aide. After his death and years of declining health, she moved to Virginia. She was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church, Aulander, N.C. While residing in New York, she served as a member of the choir, pastor's aid society and usher board of her church. During her residency in Suffolk and Franklin, Virginia, she was a watch-care member at Macedonia A.M.E. Church, 127 Pine Street, Suffolk, VA. She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest while traveling and helping family, friends and her community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Ray, father, Mallion Marsh, mother, Mazor Marsh, her brothers, Willie Marsh and James Marsh, sisters, Ruby Marsh and Elsie Davis. She leaves to cherish her memory the last of her five siblings, Loerene M. Powell, Suffolk, VA, a god-daughter, Yvette Head of New York, five nieces, Carolyn Davis and Mary Alice Sessoms of Aulander, NC, Kathy Marsh-Moore of Bergenfield, NJ, Chandra Johnson of Suffolk, VA, and Maleika Marsh of California, a host of great-nephews and nieces, a devoted friend, Carlise Taylor and dedicated care-givers, Amanda Boone and Darlene Brown, cousins and friends. A celebration of life will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at Zion Grove Baptist Church, 1631 North Carolina Hwy 561 W, Aulander, NC 27805. Ms. Ray will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. The family will be receiving friends and guests at Crocker Funeral Home on August 13, 2019, from 5 pm to 7 pm.
