On Friday, September 4, 2020 our beloved sister, aunt and friend, Gloria Jean Howell-Smith gained her wings on her birthday in Select Specialty Hospital in Savannah Georgia. She was number 9 of 10 children born to the late Al Smith Howell, Sr. and Flossie Mae Picott of Holland, VA. Gloria accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She joined Pulaski Baptist Church in Carrsville, Va. She attended Southwestern Middle School and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School c/o 1984. She worked as a secretary for her father's business. She later moved to Georgia with her sister Linda and made it her home. She worked at Coastal State Prison in Rincon,GA and Effingham Prison in Garden City, GA as a Correctional Officer. Officer Smith worked for 13 years at both facilities. She had been battling with medical issues for several years. She was still working. She always said she was a daddy's girl. We all knew that and that is where she will be buried by her daddy. She is preceded in death by her parents Al Smith Howell, Sr. and Flossie Mae Picott-Howell, her sisters, Linda Howell-Warathan, Wanda Howell Adeapo, Sandra Howell-Dunson and her ex-husband, Randolph Smith. She is survived by her siblings, Jackie Maddrey, Al Smith Howell, Sr. (Michelle), Julius Howell (Jameka), Katrina Howell, Lora Copeland (Thaddeus), Monica Howell; nieces, nephews, cousins; aunts, Joan Harris and Betty Picott; uncle, William Billy Howell (Shirley); special friends and co-workers, Theresa Hunter, Malinda Orr-Johnson and Andrea Watkins. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2020 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in Howell-Collins Family Cemetery.
