Gertrude Gwaltney, 85, of Atlantic Avenue, Ivor, Virginia transitioned Thursday, January 24, 2019 surrounded by family and caregivers. Gertrude was a native of Southampton County. She was born January 9, 1934, the oldest of five to Stanley Jones, Sr., and Nettie Mae Davis Jones. She attended Hayden High School in Franklin, Virginia and was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church, Ivor, Virginia. She did domestic work in the Petersburg and Colonial Heights area for many years. Later after her driving was limited, she worked as a personal caregiver and in the daycare at the Mars Hill AME Zion Church, Wakefiled, Virginia. Gertrude was kind spiritied and a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roland Gwaltney, Sr., son, Roland Gwaltney, Jr.; and sister, Vernice Jones Walker. She is survived by five sons, Stanley (Cathy) Gwaltney, Hampton, Virginia; Bobbie (Mildred) Gwaltney, Wakefield, Virginia; r. Keith Gwaltney, Owasso, Oklahoma; Tony (Angela) Gwaltney, Ivor, Virginia; and Karl (Shawanda) Gwaltney, Ivor, Virginia; eight grandchildren, Derrick (Ashley) Gwaltney, Shanara Gwaltney, Tony (Kenyatta) Gwaltney, Karvin Gwaltney, Chiquita Gwaltney, Devin Brown, Keith Gwaltney, and Kevin Gwaltney; five great grandchildren, Tavianna Gwaltney, Dana Ward, Danasia Ward, DeAndre Ward, and Nylah Branch; a sister,Florence Woodard, Chester, Virginia; two brothers, Stanley Jones, Jr. (Elizabeth), Wakefield, Virginia; and Clarence H. Jones, Franklin, Virginia, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2019 at Mount Sinai Baptist Church, 17165 Racetrack Road, Ivor, Virginia 23866. Rev. Leslie Holloway, Jr. will deliver the message of comfort. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
