Obituary for George Lawrence Baker, Sr., November 13, 1936 – September 8, 2025

George Lawrence Baker, Sr. was born on November 13, 1936, to the late Nathaniel Sr. and Rosa Baker. He departed this life on Monday, September 8, 2025, at his home.

George lived a full and meaningful life rooted in faith, family, and service. He was known for his upbeat personality, kind heart, and unmistakable sense of humor that could brighten any room. Whether through a quick-witted joke or a warm smile, George had a gift for making others feel welcome and loved.

He spent many dedicated years working at Kraft Foods before retiring. Never one to sit still for long, George turned his passion for driving into a second career when he founded G & B Charter Services. He proudly ran the business for several years, offering transportation with a personal touch, before retiring again to enjoy life at a slower pace surrounded by family, friends, and the things he loved most.

Music was one of George’s greatest joys. He loved singing in the Male Chorus and a gospel quartet with his son, brother, and close friends—a tradition that brought him immense happiness and connected him deeply to his faith. Whether behind the wheel or behind a microphone, George lived life with joy and purpose.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Baker; two sons, Tonieyo Baker and Danny Baker; one daughter, Bobbie Jean Perry; four brothers; and two sisters. Though his heart carried the weight of these losses, his love for them never faded and remained a guiding light throughout his life.

Cherishing his memory are his son, George Baker Jr.; and his daughters, Rosa Annette Baker Battle, Deborah Drakeford, and Lori Baker Robinson. He is also survived by two devoted brothers, Miles Baker (Jean) and Isiaah Baker (Carolyn); one loving sister, Ruby Ann Snead; daughter-in-law, Valerie Baker; son-in-law, Charles Perry; sister-in-law, Estella Jones; brother-in-law, Norman Stover; bonus daughter, Shaune Alexander; and beloved companion, Dorothy "Dot" Lawrence.

George was the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren: Dennette Bailey (James), Renee Baker, Latasha Young (Jared), Kania Baker-Jackson (Riheim), Danny Baker, Shane Baker, Robert Robinson IV, Donovan Robinson, Maya Robinson, and Dillon Robinson. His legacy continues through eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends who will carry his memory forward with love.

George Lawrence Baker, Sr. will be remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the way he made others feel valued, uplifted, and loved. His spirit, laughter, and song will echo in the hearts of those who knew him.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:21
