Ms. Eva Rountree Baker peacefully answered God's call on Friday, June 14, 2024 at her residence. She was a dear mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.
Eva was the daughter of the late Murphy and Anner Rountree. She was born in Nansemond County on February 14, 1945. She was a graduate of the class of 1963 of Nansemond County Training School and completed several medical clerical certifications. After over 40 years of service collectively, she retired from Obici Hospital and Bon Secours.
At the young age of twelve, Eva accepted Christ in her at then Zion Congregational Christian Church, later Zion United Church of Christ and today, Zion Christian Church. She was a dedicated and devoted member for 67 years, having served in the Women's Fellowship, the Usher's Ministry, the Trustee Board, and as the church treasurer.
Eva was preceded in death by her brother, Wallace "Pete" Rountree and sister, Jean Elizabeth Richardson.
Eva affectionally known as "Sunny" by her family and Ma-Ma by her grands leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Sylvonnia Dickens (Rodell) of Suffolk, VA and Sharon Ruffin (Percy) of Virginia Beach, VA; son, Isiaah L. Baker (Victoria) of Suffolk, VA; four grandsons dear to her heart, Ryan Dickens (Anthonette), Cody Dickens (Rachel), Percy Alexander Ruffin, and William Nicholas Ruffin; six wonderful great-grands, Caleb, Caleya, Royce, Rhas, Cairo, and Camille; a beloved sister, Evelyn Faulk and dear cousin, like a brother, Ronald Holland (Viola), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; a devoted friend and sister, Ms. Ella J. Baker; and special friend and caregiver, Ms. Annette Harris.
A public viewing will be held 5:30-7:00pm, Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2024 at Zion Christian Church. She will be entombed at Carver Memorial Cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
