She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas Winborne Sr.; Son, Thomas Winborne, Jr.; Sons-in-Law, Lester Walton, and Anthony Coleman; Brothers, William Mayso Johnson, Johnnie Johnson, Shelton Johnson, Leon Johnson, and Ernest Johnson; Sister, Carrie Johnson Ingram. Ethel was educated in Suffolk Public Schools and resided in Suffolk most of her life before moving to Richmond, Virginia in 2010. Ethel was a member of First Baptist Church of South Richmond and prior to her illness, she was employed at the Hilton Richmond Hotel and Spa. Ethel loved the Lord and was not afraid to show it. She was a faithful servant always working to helping others. Ethel adored her children and grandchildren and was truly a mom to all. She loved cooking and was infamously known for her delicious Potato Salad. Ethel was also known for her cleaning abilities. If the following phrase were a scripture, “Cleanliness is next to godliness” it would have been Ethel’s favorite scripture. Ethel was an advocate for voter registration and believed in equality for all. Ethel loved sports (The Washington Football (Redskins) Fan) and she loved her grand dogs, Tiger, Lola, Sapphire, and Onyx. Ethel birthed three children but was a mother to many. She leaves to cherish her loving memories five daughters: Tonya Hall–Lynch (Antoine), Wanda Lawrence, Jewel Winborne-Coleman, Barbara Walton, and Diane Gee (Gee); four sons: Thomas D. Winborne, Terry Winborne (Kim), Tony Winborne (Melissa), and Steven Winborne; one sister, Mildred Bowers; one brother, Billy C. Johnson (Mary); 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great- grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7 A celebration of life will be held 12:00 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2020 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 2635 East Washington Street, Suffolk, Virginia 23434.
