Estella Virginia Jones was born January 28, 1930 in Southampton County, Virginia to the late Frank and Lillian Ricks Wood. She was the seventh of eight children. In addition to her parents and husband, Alex J. Jones, Estella was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Wood, George Wood, John Wood, and Joe Wood; three sisters, Martha Morings, Elizabeth Green, and Emma Cross.Estella accepted Christ at an early age, and became a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Como, N.C. She and her siblings were raised in a Christian environment with both paretns teaching and living Godly lives before them. Her family moved to Suffolk in 1942 where she remained a proud Suffolkian. In 1960, she became a member of Tabernacle Christian Church serving as a Youth Counselor, Church School Teacher, Co-Founder of Tabernacle Seekers Youth Ministry, and Vacation Bible School Coordinator. Estella was caring and loving which was evident by her generous spirit as she truly believed in sharing her Holy Father's blessings with others.Estella was a 1946 graduate of East Suffolk High School. She became an employee of Planters Peanut Co. for eighteen years before making the decision to enroll at Norfolk State College, Norfolk, VA from where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education then Norfolk State University. She pursued her post-graduate studies at Hampton University and received her Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. Estella continued her studies to receive a Master of Relgious Education from Virginia University of Lynchburg. Additional studies were completed in administration and supervision at the University of Virginia, College of William and Mary, Old Dominion University and Paul D. Camp Community College. She was employed by the Suffolk Public School System as an elementary school teacher for twenty-four years prior to retiring in 1991.After retirement,Estella being known as a compassionate person became a volunteer Chaplain for Sentara Obici Hospital for many years counseling families with hospitalized loved ones. She, also developed a hobby for cake-making ;and catering. The enjoyment she received from those hobbies allowed her to display her talent at various events. She had a passion for entertaining, and would think of reasons to have a gathering in her home. Estella welcomed you with open arms at each visit to her humble abode as she never had the desire to venture outside of Suffolk. Her love for people was immeasurable!Estella touched the lives of family and many friends, and her legacy will live on for generations to come. She leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and several "special" friends whom she considered as family.Her most frequently quoted scriptural verse is: Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. She will lie in repose Tuesday starting at 10 a.m. at East End Baptist church, a celebration of life will be held noon Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at East End Baptist Church.
