Eloise Juanita Smith was born December 21, 1938, to the late Louis Britt and Ledora Lewis in Suffolk, VA formally known as Nansemond County. The Lord welcomed Eloise into his Kingdom of Heaven on March 15, 2023, a the divine age of 84. Eloise was raised in Suffolk, VA and attended East Suffolk High School. She later moved to Norfolk, VA where she began to build her legacy. Eloise was preceded in death by her husband George C. Smith. Eloise was strong willed and always encouraged others to keep pushing for what they want and believe. In her early career, Eloise worked for Norfolk Naval Base Postal Services. Eloise worked for Norfolk Public Schools for over 23 years as a Teacher Assistant where she not only encouraged growing minds within the school, but also took time to provide additional tutoring services. She also served as a member of the NEA (Norfolk Education Association) and the VEA (Virginia Education Association). Eloise served God and her community relentlessly. She was a faithful member of Metropolitan Baptist Church located in Suffolk, VA where she attended services until her health declined. She served as a member of the Polly Armstrong Missionary, Sunday School, Lot Carey and the Senior Choir. Additionally, Eloise was a proud member of the Eastern Star Adah Chapter No. 20 for 18 years. Through Eloise's illness, she never complained and remained in great spirits. Eloise was the matriarch of her family and she loved them unconditionally. Always coordinating her attire, Eloise was a classy woman who believed that if you look good you feel good. Eloise was loving, humorous, and sometimes a little feisty. Her sweet smile and bright eyes will truly be missed, but her beautiful spirit will remain in our hearts forever. Left to cherish her memory, Eloise is survived by her two daughters, Linda Britt and Elizabeth Britt-Kelly (John) both of Norfolk, VA; five brothers, Louis Britt of South Carolina, Andrew "Andy" Britt (Iantha) of Texas, Samuel "Sam" Britt of Suffolk, VA, Horace Britt (Darlene) of Chesapeake, VA, Jerry Britt (Gayle) of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren, Crystal Alison of Chesapeake, VA, Tarsha MacPherson (deceased), Everson Britt (Marcey) of Suffolk, VA, John Kelly of Virginia Beach, VA, Ashley Kelly-Barnes (Travis) of Norfolk, VA; great grandchildren, Madisyn Barnes, Mason Barnes, Jovani Kelly; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends. A celebration of life will be held noon, Friday, March 24, 2023 at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Ms. Smith will be laid to rest in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
