Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.
Sad, but comforted by the many wonderful years together, we say goodbye to our beloved mother and grandmother.
Doris Jean Cheeks (Langston)
September 22, 1947 ~ April 1, 2026
After a difficult illness borne with courage, our mother and grandmother was released from suffering on Wednesday, April 1. Doris Cheeks affectionately called "Jean" passed away at Sentara Obici Hospital surrounded by family and friends at the age of 78.
Born in Nansemond County, Doris graduated from Southwestern High School in 1965. She attended Norfolk State University and Paul D. Camp Community College. In 2017, she retired as an Administrative Assistant from Albert Jones Realty. She was a member of East End Baptist Church.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Traci Cheeks, Shameka Cheeks Aponte, Kareem (Talisha) Cheeks and Jessica Langston; grandchildren: Jordan Chambers, Montreal Newby Jr, Ariel Aponte Jr, Shyla Cheeks, Kyson Cheeks and Kyran Cheeks; siblings: Johnnie Langston (Jackie), Shirley (Whitman) Hicks, and Marie Johnson (Thomas); special cousin Geraldine Cooke and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, McCoy and Corine Langston, Sam Langston (loving stepfather); husband, Calvin Cheeks; siblings: Vernon Langston (Gladys), Annette Sumler (Larry), Norris Langston, and Terry Langston; nephews: Michael Hicks and Desmond Sumler.
We will never forget you, you continue to live in our hearts.
A public viewing will be held 12 Noon - 7pm, Friday, April 10, 2026 at Crocker Funeral Home. A memorial service commemorating her life will take place 1:00pm, Saturday, April 18, 2026 at New First Baptist Church Hosier Road, 1105 Hosier Road, Suffolk, VA 23434. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
