Doretha Skeeter Milteer, a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, educator, and community volunteer, transitioned to her Heavenly home on July 25, 2020 after a brief illness. She was born in Suffolk, Virginia to the late Ikey Skeeter and Mollie Gill Skeeter on June 29, 1929, along with her twin sister, Dora. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior at Mt. Ararat Christian Church where she was a life-long member. Doretha graduated from East Suffolk High School as class valedictorian and from Virginia State University. Following graduation, she moved to New York to work as a dietitian at Sydenham Hospital. She returned to Suffolk to marry Eugene Milteer on August 23, 1952. Following this union, she taught in Suffolk Public Schools for almost twenty years. Until her transition, she continued to be in touch with many of her former students. Doretha joined Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated while at Virginia State University. She was a Charter Member of the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter, serving as the chapter's first treasurer. As a member, she chaired and served on many committees over the past 56 years. In 1984, she has honored at Founders Day for her work as chair of the Program and Projects Committee. Doretha's spirit was always one of servant leader. She invested her time and talents to make a difference in important aspects of African-American life. She was elected to the STOP Neighborhood Advisory Council. After serving as President of the East Suffolk Friends of the Library and helping to establish a satellite library branch at the East Suffolk Complex, Doretha was appointed by the Suffolk City Council as a member of the Suffolk Library Board of Directors. Additionally, she received the 4-H Gold Clover Award for ten years of a 4-H Club Leadership and the Outstanding 4-H Club Alumni Award. At Mt. Ararat Christian Church, she served as a Bible School Teacher annually and as a Trustee. Additionally, Doretha was a member of the Suffolk Game Club and the Pinochle Club. She was a Life Member of the NAACP and Retired Teachers Association. with all of her activities and all of her giving of time and talent, the most important thing to her was family. She truly loved her immediate and extended family. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. Doretha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene Milteer, on April 22, 2020. She leaves to cherish her memory two devoted and loving children, daughter, Dr. Regina Milteer-Rock and son, Dr. Warren E. Milteer, Sr.; four beloved grandchildren, Dr. Warren E. Milteer, Jr., Ashley Rock-Smith, Brandon Milteer, and Bethanie Milteer; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Rock Smith and Leah Rose Smith; devoted son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Pitman C. Rock, Jr., and Stephanie B. Milteer; her grandson-in-law, Marcus Smith, her loving twin sister, Dora Lockett and brother, Aubrey Skeeter; a special niece, Betty Watson, brother-in-law, Curtis Milteer, sisters-in-law Lennora Skeeter, Eloise Skeeter, Elsie Milteer, and Sarah Milteer, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews, other relatives, special fiends, and sorority sisters. In addition to her husband and parents, Doretha was preceded in death by her sisters, Fletcher Saunders and Marjorie Witcher; and brothers, Derwood Skeeter and Lorena Skeeter. A celebration of life will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2020 in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Robert Hobbs will deliver the message of comfort.
