David C. "Ko-Koo" Baker, III

October 21, 1947 — May 3, 2021

David C. Baker of Suffolk transitioned peacefully on Monday, May 3, 2021 at his residence. David was a 1968 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School. He was a member of Lakeview Missionary Baptist Church. After 32 years of service, he retired from Northrop Grumman Shipyard as a 1st class Welder. David was a major contributor to the quality of life in his community for people by nurturing, teaching, training, coaching, leading, assisting, beautifying, counseling, organizing, and serving towards the improvement and wholesome development of all. David's passion for nurturing young boys was evident as he co-founded the Suffolk Steelers and stayed actively involved in Little League Football for over 40 years. Ko-Koo as he is affectionately known to his family and community loved life and his family. Ko-Koo, a man dedicated to community engagement, provided voluntarily much needed transportation, lawn care, and other service to neighborhood residents who were sick or who were mourning the loss of a loved one in their household. His community affiliations included but not limited to Hollywood-Jericho Civic League, East Suffolk Federated Civic League where he was currently serving as President and a member of the Suffolk Chapter of Norfolk State Alumni Association. He was preceded in death by his father, James G. Baker, Sr.; mother Laura B. Copeland, sister Mildred Copeland, brothers, Dwight N. Baker, Sr. and Connie L. Baker. David is survived by his wife of fifty years Jennifer Ballard Baker, son, David A. Rountree of Norfolk, daughter, Tara Baker Britt (Franco), Suffolk, brother, James G. Baker Jr. Suffolk, six loving grandchildren, DaMarco Britt, Danielle Miller, Keeshawn Faltz, Keeshawna Faltz, Davida Faltz and Jasmine Jordan; great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Mae C. Brodie; a special nephew, Ronald Ingram and niece, Brandy Morgan-Boyd. and a host of relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. A viewing will be held 12-6 p.m. Sunday, May 9, 2021 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. Visitation with family will be held from 4-6 p.m. A celebration of life will be held noon, Monday, May 10, 2021 at Metropolitan Baptist Church. He will be a laid to rest in Holly Lawn Cemetery.
