Curtis Junious Washington, Sr. departed this life on Friday, February 26, 2021 in Sentara Obici Hosptial. Born May 15, 1933 in Isle of Wight County, Curtis was the last surviving sibling of five brothers and four sisters born to the late Joshua and Elmira Johnson Washington. Curtis retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA after 38 years of employment as a Supervisor in the Planning and Estimating Department. Curtis was one of the first black Managers in the Naval Yard. He was well respected amongst his employees and co-workers. Curtis also worked several years for CIBA Chemicals as a courier. Curtis had a love for baseball, traveling, crossword puzzles and BINGO. One of the founding members of the Central Baseball League, Curtis served as the Treasurer until they dissolved. In his early years he played semi-pro ball for the Suffolk Mets and coached the Ivor Tigers. Curtis was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Mary Artis Washington. He leaves to mourn his passing his children – Curtis J. Washington, Jr. of Louisville, KY, Jacqueline W. (late Tedlee) Hargrove of Chesapeake, VA. Belinda (Aldrian) Godwin, Calvin (Jackie) Simmons, Larry (Vicki) Holiday all of Suffolk, VA. Nichole Simmons of Smithfield, VA. Marcus Artis of Washington, DC and Calcy Laverne Eason of Gates County, NC. He was well-loved and respected by his 22 grandchildren, 24 great-grands and 2 great-great grandchildren. Curtis was a kind and soft-spoken man who had a funny sense of humor. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, extended family, Lake Forest community, friends, as well as his daily Bingo table mates. Family visitation and public viewing will be Monday, March 8th from 1 – 4PM and on Tuesday, March 9th from 9 -10:30AM. Memorial service will be 11AM Tuesday, March 9th in Crocker Funeral Home chapel. The memorial service will be livestreamed on Facebook via Crocker Funeral Home, Inc Facebook page. Due to COVID restrictions immediate family only. Military rites to follow 1PM at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
