Mr. Charlie Edward Yates, born November 3, 1937, in Whaleyville Borough of Suffolk, Virginia to the late Georgia V. Mills-Yates and the late Charlie T. Yates, passed away at 80 years of age on June 28, 2018. He graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1956 and went on to pursue a career as a barber, graduating from Tyler Barber College of New York in 1966. Beginning in 1957, Charlie served in the Army National Guard before opening his own barber shop in Brooklyn, NY for more than forty years. He returned to his hometown to be near his ailing mother where he opened another shop at his residence, retiring in 2017. Charlie was the beloved husband of the late Clara Mae Connor Yates formally of Waco, Texas. He is preceded in death by a sister, the late Doris Lee Yates Walker of Philadelphia, PA and a brother Raleigh Lindell Yates of Long Island, NY. He leaves behind one daughter, Princess Adena Yates Goins of Long Island, NY. His devoted and loving sister Dorothy Mae Yates Dillard, a granddaughter, Ashleigh Sampson of Manhattan, NY, a great-granddaughter, Jolie Antoine also of Manhattan, NY; brother in law, James Walker; five nieces, Alimah T. Walker, Alisa T. Walker, Tammey E. Yates Jacobs, Tracie V. Yates Hinton and a very special niece Deborah D. Dillard; two nephews, Linwood R. Dillard and James M. Walker; two aunts, Mrs. Carrie Yates and Mrs. Lee Ellen Mills; a very special cousin, Robert E. Mills; a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Charlie had many wide and varied interest including painting, sketching, bowling, golfing, baseball, stamp collecting, guitar, and organ. He was a former member of the NAACP and he and his wife Clara, a former councilwoman in Brooklyn, NY were very involved in politics, working the polls every year of their residency here in Virginia. The family invites you to make donations in Charlie Yates name to the Alzheimer’s Association and to Mineral Springs Baptist Church. A celebration of life will be held noon Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church, 4849 Mineral Spring Road. Rev. Alan Ray Hunt will deliver the message of comfort.
