Cary “Chicken” Newsome Jr.

November 30, 1938- January 14, 2026

Cary Newsome Jr., 87, of Suffolk, Virginia, was called home to be with the Lord on January 14, 2026, at 1000 Litton Lane, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie Newsome, and his sister, Nellie “Micey” Tann.

Cary was born on November 30, 1938, to the late Cary Newsome Sr. and Flossie Knight Newsome in Nansemond County, Virginia.

Cary graduated from East Suffolk High School and went on to serve in the United States Air Force. After completing his service and receiving an honorable discharge, he worked for QVC, retiring from the company in Suffolk, Virginia.

He cherished spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed taking short trips to the beach and visiting extended family in North Carolina. Cary also took great joy in watching his Commanders (formerly the Redskins) play.

Cary was a man of God. He generously shared words of wisdom and encouragement to uplift the spirits of others. He brought joy and laughter to his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him, with a smile that could brighten any room. Cary took great pride in himself and carried himself with dignity and grace.

He leaves his precious memories to be cherished by three daughters: Laverne N. Boykins (Thomas), Wanda Newby (Calvin), and Brenda Atkins, all of Suffolk, Virginia; and two sons: Cary Newsome III (Helen) and Donell Johnson, also of Suffolk, Virginia.

He is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Micha Savage, Krystle Newsome Harris (Charles), Shena Newby, Carey Newsome IV, Kwanane Newsome, Quashaylia Newsome, Officer Shawn Boyette (Sharon), Ramon Boyette (Nina), all of Suffolk, Virginia; LaWanda Brown (Roscoe) of Portsmouth, Virginia; Shawkneequah Hawkins (Charles) of Fort Worth, Texas; and Retired Chief Petty Officer Shawn A. Newsome of Jacksonville, Florida.

He leaves behind twenty-one great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Cary will be missed dearly, but his legacy will continue to live on through his family.
