Franklin

On Saturday, December 23, 2023, Carolyn Dolores Silver Joyner peacefully entered a greater world in union with God.  Carolyn was born in Enfield, North Carolina on May 3, 1947, to the late Mary Baker Silver and George Alvin Silver, Sr.

Carolyn received her early education in the Halifax public school system, graduating from Inborden High School, Enfield, North Carolina in 1965.  She continued her education at Norfolk State College and Paul D. Camp Community College where she received an Associate degree.  Later, Carolyn completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia.

Carolyn married Willie Allen Joyner, Jr. on November 25, 1967.  As a devoted wife and mother, she spent her early years raising her two daughters, Crystal Alicia Joyner and Stacie Karen Joyner-Pettway, and taking care of her husband at their farm in Branchville, Virginia.

Always community and family focused, Carolyn devoted her life to service.  Spending her spare time serving on numerous community boards and working as a substitute teacher in the public schools, in addition to attending weddings, funerals, holiday celebrations, and family gatherings with extended family members.  As her children grew older, Carolyn entered the workforce full-time, working at the Franklin YMCA and eventually as secretary to the Director of Personnel with the City of Franklin, Virginia.  Even with all these responsibilities, Carolyn continued volunteering with various community and civic activities in Franklin and throughout Southampton County.  After about thirty-five years, Carolyn retired from the City of Franklin as the Director of Human Resources in 2013.

Left to honor and cherish her memory are two daughters, Crystal and Stacie (Phil); one beloved grandson, Teague Julian Pettway; her brother Vincent Silver (Laverne), her sister Cheryl Silver Emmanuel (Michael); aunts Claytea Baker Newby, Clementine Baker Ross, Lula Baker and Helen Hunter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.  She was preceded in death by her loving aunt and uncle, Earlene and “Dickie” Owes, husband Willie Allen Joyner, Jr., and brother George Alvin Silver, Jr.
