On Thursday, September 10, 2020 our beloved Carlos Antonio Ward Sr., transitioned peacefully from this life into eternal rest at the age of 50. Carlos was born on January 23, 1970 in Suffolk, Virginia to Ernest Wright Ward Sr., and Helen Patricia Ward. Carlos attended Suffolk Public Schools and graduated from Suffolk High School in 1986. After graduation he began his tenure with the City of Suffolk Department of Public Works in 1989. He served in many roles during his 31 years of service with Public Works to include Sanitation Worker, Sanitation Equipment Operator, Sanitation Superintendent, General Services Manager and General Manager for Operations. His hard work and leadership abilities led him to be promoted to Assistant Director in 2019 where his efforts continued to shine. Carlos proudly represented the City of Suffolk and was a voice for all including citizens and his coworkers. He had a special love for the community and City of Suffolk which was displayed for over 25 years through his membership with The Suffolk Boosters Club. Carlos became President of The Suffolk Boosters Club in 2015 and proudly served until his last days. Carlos was a devoted husband, beloved son, loving father and attentive grandfather. When family and friends reflect on his memory they will long remember his welcoming smile, sense of humor, compassionate spirit, sense of style, infectious laugh and his love for the Philadelphia Eagles. He would give anyone the shirt off his back and loved to help others succeed in life. If you asked a hundred people who Carlos “Low” Ward Sr. was, they’d all give you a different answer. A friend. A leader. A mentor. A boss. A supporting shoulder. He was an exceptional member of the City of Suffolk community and was well known and adored by all. To know Carlos was to love him and he will be greatly missed. Carlos was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Wright Ward Sr. and his brother, Carl Ward. Carlos is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Evelyn Marsha Ward; his son, Carlos A. Ward Jr. (fiancé Shannon Higgs); two grandsons, Carlos A. Ward III and Khyree Ward; mother, Helen P. Ward; father in law, George E. Martin; sister Patricia Ward; five brothers, Ernest Ward Jr., Gary Ward, Steve Ward, Nathaniel Jones (Janine), and Antwon Ward; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Public viewing will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2020 4:30-7 p.m. and Friday, September 18, 2020 12-7 p.m. in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 19,2020 in Holy Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
