Brenda Johnson Hargett was born February 19, 1948, in N.C. to the late Mrs. Mattie Johnson Monroe. From her earliest days, Brenda was bold, outspoken, stylish, and a woman with many talents.
Brenda was a hard worker who believed in teaching her daughters that education was the way. She attended Booker T. Washington High School and then received her Associate's degree from Medgar Evers College. She also received her Cosmetology license and was a backup singer for the late Roberta Flack.
Brenda spent many years in New York, where she met and married her ex. Husband Charles Hargett Jr., Later Mrs. Mattie Johnson Monroe, and to finish raising her daughters. While here, she worked at Norshipco, Farm Fresh, and Club TLC.
On the night of April 17, 2025, God, in His infinite wisdom, called His child home to be with him.
Brenda's legacy will be lovingly remembered by her daughters: Sheila Cheeks, Stephanie Belinfante (Melvin, Jr.), both of Suffolk, VA, India Gray (Johnathan Jr.) of Stafford, VA.
Grandchildren who were her whole heart and known as NANA were Tocarra Cheeks, Henrico, VA, Imari Hubbard (Ashley), and Suffolk, VA. Drakkar Griffin (Shakira), Charlotte, NC, Daniel Joe Jr., Suffolk, VA., Dakota Joe, Petersburg, VA, Sharon Belinfante, Ahoskie, NC, Melvin Belinfante III, Suffolk, VA, Tiagiana Jackson, Suffolk, VA, T'Kai Morton-Bailey, Chesapeake, VA, Midal Duncan, Petersburg, VA, Kenneth Belinfante, Suffolk, VA., Mystique C. Gray, and Jonathan Gray, both of Stafford VA.
10 Great-grandchildren, who were the apple of her eye.

Best Friends: Joyceann Henry and Jackie Ford.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mattie Johnson Monroe, brothers, Marvin and Charles Johnson, former in-laws, Charles Sr. and Celeste Hargett, Carl Ross, and her nephew, Anthony Jones.
A public viewing will be held 3-7 pm, Friday, May 2, 2025, in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel. A celebration of life will be held 12 noon, Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Gates of Heaven C.O.G.I.C. She will be entombed at Carver Memorial Cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
