On Thursday, June 6, 2024, God called our dearly beloved Minister Betty Reid Turner to her heavenly home. Betty was born July 11, 1954 in Nansemond County, VA to the late John A. Reid, Jr. and Doretha W. Reid. She was the oldest of seven children born to that union. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Alton E. Reid and Jeffrey Reid.
Betty was educated in the Suffolk Public School System. She was a graduate of Forest Glen High School Class of 72. In August 1972, Betty began working as a sales clerk at Roses. Next, she worked at Dollar Store in Franklin, VA. In January 1978, Betty became a bank teller at Bank of America. While working there, she received many honors and awards. After 32 years of service working in the bank she retired. After retirement, she realized that she missed working with the senior citizens. She became certified as a PCA. She enjoyed taking care of her patients. Their families became part of her family. After the passing of her oldest patient and the immense effect it had on Betty, she decided to retire again. She still kept in close contact with the family.
Betty really loved the Lord!!! She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mill Neck Baptist Church, Como, N.C. Later on with her mother and other siblings, Betty joined Laurel Hill United Church of Christ, Suffolk, VA. She was an active member who enjoyed singing int he choirs and being a member of the Youth Advisory Council. She later joined Great Commission Church and was ordained as a Minister. When G.C.C. became part of Celebration Church, Franklin, VA, Betty became a partner. She was licensed Minister and a member of the Ambassadors' Ministry. It brought her much joy to serve God and others.
Betty loved everybody! She never stopped smiling. She was very joyful and loving. She enjoyed the pure joy of hugging and talking. Betty especially loved serving at the Salvation Army Community Soup kitchen, passing out food at the Foodbank (Mobile Pantry) locations, feeding the adults and children every Sunday afternoon at the College Drive Park in Franklin, VA and distributing clothes to those in need. She also provided temporary shelter for different individuals. She also loved helping and showing love to others. Betty believed in helping anyone and everyone, no matter what they needed she would do her best to give it to them. Because of this, when Betty went in any store in Franklin, she was always greeted fondly by someone she knew! They were happy to see her and she was always happy to see them.
Her hobbies consisted of coin collecting studying the Word, writing, giving cards and gifts, singing and watching "Highway to Heaven" (1984). Her favorite activity was praising and worshipping the Lord. She also loved to pray for others and herself. She loved to talk about Jesus and His Goodness. She would get so happy that she would do her own special "praise dance". She truly was God's Woman!!!
Betty leaves to cherish her memory her three children, Charles Anthony, Carlton and Charlene Turner; goddaughter, Adonis Dixon; brothers, Randy L. Reid (Lyndra), Calvin Reid and Anthony M.
