Mrs. Betty Lou Council was born on December 8, 1936 to the late John and Louise Gray in Southampton County, Virginia. She went into eternal rest on June 1, 2023. Mrs. Betty was the sweetest and humblest person who meant the world to her family and friends. She loved to cook, clean, sing, watch soap operas, and she loved going to church. At an early age she joined Ebenezer Baptist Church in Ivor, Virginia and was attending Sixth Street Baptist Church in Suffolk, Virginia until her health failed. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Louise Gray; her husband, Nathaniel Council Sr; siblings, Nellie Hawkins, Violet Sumblin, Marvin Gray, Bennie Gray, Evelyn Jenkins, Shirley Funches, and James Gray; granddaughters, Jacquelyn Murphy, Phillisteen Boykins, and Sherita Murphy; great-grandson, Zakari Parker Cross; daughter-in-law, Doreen Council; and goddaughter, Marie Walker. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Jean Council; step-daughter, Marjorie Baker; five sons, Vernon Council, Nathaniel Council, Jr., Randolph Council (Sietta), Danny Council, and Thomas Council; three sister-in-laws, Mongolia Smith, Martha Council, and Mildred Council; one brother-in-law, Raymond Council, Sr; 20 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren; best friends; Gloria Whitfield, Bernice Harden, Ophelia Riddick, and Pauline Adams; special friends, Sylvester and Mary Harden; goddaughter, Diane Adams, who loved her like a mother and it wasn't anything they wouldn't do her; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. With tearful eyes, we watched you and saw you pass away and although we love you dearly, we could not make you stay A public viewing will be held 4:00 - 6:00pm, Wednesday, June 14, 2023 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held 1:30p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2023 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Ivor, VA. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
